The Albany-Santiam Canal is the topic of a program to be given by Gregg Cruzan at the Linn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution meeting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10.
The group will meet at The Villas at Courtyard, 1929 Grand Prairie Road S.E., in Albany. The public is invited.
Part of the history of the canal includes early Albany settler Thomas Monteith, who had the idea of constructing a barge canal from the Santiam River. The Santiam Ditch and Canal Co. was organized and construction began in 1873.
Chinese laborers were responsible for a majority of the work. It later was determined that the current was too swift for transportation, so the potential for water power was developed. In the 1920s, the canal became a water source for domestic use.
