HARRISBURG - Construction is scheduled to begin Monday on a skatepark here.
An unofficial city committee has been working for nearly a year to secure the land and the funds to build the park.
Lincoln City-based Dreamland Skateparks has been tapped to design the park and plans to break ground on the project Monday morning.
The skatepark is being funded almost entirely through donations. The total cost to build it was originally estimated at $400,000, but donations and offers for at-cost materials have lowered the cash price to about $340,000.
Knife River Corporation has donated erosion controlling fencing and will provide rebar and concrete at cost. It will also provide gravel, charging only for its delivery.
"Concrete is of particular value since there will be so much used on the skatepark," City Administrator Bruce Cleeton said.
Eagle Veneer has donated 50 sheets of plywood to the project.
The city is in the process of acquiring land located on the southwest corner of Smith and Sixth streets from the school district.
Wetland credits have been purchased from the Eugene wetlands mitigation bank.
Cleeton said the school district has agreed to allow construction to begin before the land officially changes hands.
He said construction is expected to take up to 15 weeks.
"If this estimated time schedule turns out to be exactly right, the Harrisburg Skatepark will open Christmas day," he said.
