Kids invited to scary storytelling workshop
Students in grades 3-12 are invited to a free workshop on dramatic storytelling from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Albany Public Library, 1390 Waverly Drive S.E.
Joyce Greiner of the Wonderkeepers Storytelling Guild will lead the activities, using masks, costumes, movement and voice to tell traditional stories from around the world.
The Wonderkeepers Guild holds these story journeys workshops at the Library each month, and newcomers are always welcome. All programs are free of charge, and all materials are furnished. No advance registration is required.
This month's workshop will feature scary stories, and the participants are invited to come in costume. During the final 20 minutes, the young storytellers will invite listeners of all ages to join them for a dramatic performance of spooky stories.

Bryant Park road closures planned
The west drive in Bryant Park will be closed intermittently for up to three weeks beginning Monday while a section of natural gas pipeline is laid.
Northwest Natural Gas is upgrading a gas supply pipeline to Albany. This new pipeline will be installed below ground using directional boring technology. Minimal disturbance to the park grounds will occur.
The park will remain open to public use. Flaggers will be on site during the road closures.

Community writing will be focus of event
The Albany Writers' Network will present "Evening with Henry and Friends" at 7 p.m. Monday at the Albany Public Library, 1390 Waverly Drive S.E.
Stories, poetry and other original writings by members of the community will be featured. This free event is open to the public.
The Albany Writers' Network is a group of published and unpublished writers who share tips on writing improvement, marketing, writing workshops, classes and similar topics. Anyone interested in writing or in meeting aspiring authors is welcome to join in.

Corporate philanthropy will be chamber topic
David Westcott, vice president of fevelopment and gift planning at The Oregon Community Foundation, will talk about corporate philanthropy at the Oct. 31 Albany Area Chamber of Commerce lunch forum.
The forum will be held at the Linn County Fair & Expo Center. Serving starts at 11:30 a.m. and the program beings at noon.
Prior to his current position, Westcott served as Chief Financial Officer for the University of Oregon Foundation for 11 years. Before that, he was president and founder of Independent Computer Services, a service bureau and accounting firm that specialized in non-profit and fund accounting, serving more than 100 clients.
Cost for chamber members is $13 preregistered or $15 at the door; non-members get in for $18.

South Albany jazz band to host dance fundraiser
The South Albany High School jazz band will put on a "Big Band" dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the school's cafetorium, 3705 Columbus St. S.E.
Tickets are $5 for students and seniors, $10 per adult, $15 per couple or $20 per family.
All proceeds will be used to benefit South Albany music programs.
The jazz band, The Rebellion, will provide live music from such greats as Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and more. The Albany Swing Band is scheduled to perform as a guest band.
Refreshments will also be provided.
Soroptimists holding annual poinsettia sale
Soroptimist International of Albany is holding its annual poinsettia sale.
Proceeds go to educational scholarships and to buy school supplies, clothing and shoes for children in need.
The poinsettias are available in three sizes: The 4.5-inch pots cost $5; the 6.5-inch pots, $15; and the 8.5-inch pots, $20. The plants can be ordered with red, pink or white blossoms. All poinsettias come with foil pot covers and bows.
