BROWNSVILLE
'Stand by Me' fest is today
Brownsville is celebrating the filming of the movie "Stand by Me," as it did last year, with special activities planned for today. The movie many consider a classic was shot mostly in Brownsville in 1985, and the city is celebrating its brush with Hollywood.
This year's event will feature a vintage car cruise-in, a sock hop in the Brownsville gymnasium, and locations set up around town with a viewing stand to show exact scene angles from the film. There will also be Hot Wheels races for kids and 1950s-era activities, including hula hoops, jacks and marbles, and a blueberry pie-eating contest.
The "Stand by Me Cruise In and Sock Hop" is sponsored by the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce.
