Posted: Saturday, June 6, 2009 12:00 am

Children up to age 18 may sign up to count their reading in this year's Albany Public Library Summer Reading Program.

Prizes, parties and events will fill the program, including the return of Reptile Man. Events for young adults (grades 6 through 12) include a talent show and parking lot sale, as well as participation in a marionette troupe performing with stringed puppets and opportunities for volunteer work.

Star Wars and Harry Potter events are also planned. Four preschool special events featuring visiting singers and storytellers will be offered throughout the summer.

Kids who read or listen for 25 hours can swim at an end-of-summer party at the Swanson Park pool in August.

Prizes from local merchants at Dairy Queen, Carl's Jr., Frogs and Polliwogs, Blueberry Meadows and Little Caesar's will be awarded. Weekly guessing jars offer prizes and puzzles.

Participants can pick up event calendars and reading logs at the main library, 2450 14th Ave. S.E.; at the Carnegie Library, 302 Ferry St. S.W.; or on the library's website at www.library.cityofalbany.net.
