Unions set out Christmas boxes

TANGENT - Electrical and contracting unions are setting up dollection boxes for toys, food and clothing for people in need this holiday season.

The campaign, "POWER to the Children," is taking place in Linn, Lane, Benton, Marion and Deschutes counties

Locally, boxes were being set up this week at:

• Central Electrical Training Center, 33309 Highway 99E, Tangent

• IBEW 280, 32969 Highway 99E, Tangent

• Albany PLATT, 191 34th Ave. S.W., Albany

• Corvallis PLATT, 133 S.W. Hopkins Ave., Corvallis.

The National Electrical Contractors Association also will have a donation box at its Eugene office.

Donations of food (canned and dry) and new, unwrapped clothing and toys will be accepted and donated to the Association of Foster Parents, for foster children in our area.

Checks and money orders should be made out to the Oregon Foster Parents Association and can be mailed to POWER to the Children, c/o IBEW LU 280, P.O. Box 404, Tangent, OR 97389.

The drive will end Dec. 15.

Lebanon library to host book club

LEBANON - Registration begins Nov. 29 for the Lebanon Public Library's middle school book club, to be held during January, February and March.

The club is open to students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades and is limited to the first 20 applicants. Members must sign up at the library in person.

The club is free and students do not need a library card to join.

Each month, the groups will read a different book and participate in discussions and activities related to the book.

Meetings will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evenings at the library, 626 Second St.

Julie Campbell will kick off the 2007 club on Jan. 9 with "Saffy's Angel," written by Hilary McKay.

February will feature adult leader Cindy Cady with the book "Number the Stars," by Lois Lowry.

March is to be announced.

Each participant will receive a free copy of the chosen book at the first meeting of each month.

Students may register for one or more months as their schedule allows. Waiting lists will be maintained.
