Nonprofits invited to training session

Nonprofit organizations and other community groups are invited to attend a free training hosted by Linn County Alcohol & Drug Prevention Program.

"Building Better Communities" will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Albany Mennonite Village, Lakeside Center, 5353 Columbus St.

Cliff Jones with Technical Assistance for Community Services in Portland will provide expert knowledge and training in organizational assessment and development, effective meetings and decision-making, and team assessment and development.

TACS has served the nonprofit community in Oregon for 30 years providing training, consultation, information, and resources that nonprofits need to do their work better.

LEBANON

Middle-schooler wins digital art contest

Destinee Turner of Lebanon won the Club Tech Digital Arts Festival in Photo Illustration and will represent the Boys & Girls Club of Albany at the national level.

Members created digital artwork using skills they developed through the Club Tech program, a partnership between Boys & Girls Clubs of America, founding partner Microsoft and Best Buy Children's Foundation.

Using the theme "Our Changing World," members expressed their artistic and technological skills in photo illustration, music making, movie making, web design and graphic design.

Destinee, the daughter of B.J. Turner and a student at Calapooia Middle School, entered the 13 to 15 age-group category. Her piece was selected from more than 15 displayed at the local Club Tech festival held in October.

This year's winners get a free trip to Minneapolis from Nov. 26-28.

Head Start participants to get books

Kidco Head Start has announced a partnership with Target in recognition of its efforts in fostering the love of reading in young children. Funds from the Target Community Foundation will purchase a book for each of the 410 children enrolled at nine Kidco Head Start centers in Linn and Benton counties and in Jefferson. Children will receive their books during a home visit by their teacher, and their parents will receive training on how to support literacy development for their child.

Kidco Head Start's mission is to provide a comprehensive preschool program that enhances children's development and supports families. Children qualify for the program based on low family income or special needs.
