LEBANON - It turns out that the large sum of money Pat Cascio found in his bank account on Friday was a misdirected deposit intended for a CD account in Texas.
The Democrat-Herald reported Monday on Cascio's attempts to find out why $300,000 suddenly appeared in his account.
Cascio visited his Washington Mutual bank on Monday and straightened out the error.
He learned that the number of the CD account was one digit from Cascio's and the money was deposited in his account by accident, he said.
On Friday afternoon, Cascio and his wife were surprised to read in their bank statement that $300,000 had been deposited eight days before in a little-used business account.
"We never keep more than $100 in it," he said.
The couple called a customer service representative who directed them to call someone in Houston, Texas.
The person who answered that call directed them to contact their local branch office. By that time, their bank had closed for the day.
On Monday, Cascio took up the matter with his local branch and it was fixed in about half an hour, he said.
"The funny part is, they may not have caught this mistake for months and months. Most banks don't send out statements monthly on CD accounts," he said.
The Democrat-Herald contacted a local Washington Mutual bank to ask about the glitch, but a company policy prevents employees from talking to the press.
