Automated teller machines in most Oregon DMV field offices, including Albany and Corvallis, are temporarily unavailable this summer, so the agency is asking customers to bring enough cash or their checkbooks to do business.

The DMV does not accept credit or debit card payments at field offices.

The agency has entered a contract with a new ATM provider, and the previous provider was on schedule to have its machines removed from DMV field offices by the end of July, according to DMV spokesman David House.

House said the agency does not accept credit or debit cards because of the mechant fees charged by banks, usually 2 percent, which would take millions of dollars out of the highway fund.

Lebanon's DMV office does not have an ATM machine, according to the agency website.

Other ATMs may be available near DMV field offices, so customers who need one are encouraged to ask the staff if they know of a machine nearby.

The new provider, First National ATM, has agreed to install its machines within 90 days of the new contract's start date, which is Aug. 1.

However, DMV expects the company will be able to complete installation within about 60 days.

Five additional field offices will get ATMs under the new contract for a total of 57 out of DMV's 67 field offices. The offices that will get ATMs for the first time are Burns, Canyonville, Cave Junction, Lakeview and Lincoln City.

Customers also will save a few cents, as the ATM vendor's fee will be $1.75 instead of $1.90.

DMV has had ATMs in some field offices for the past five years. The service was created as an option for customers.
