LEBANON - Speeding, driving without a license and failure to use a safety belt are among the most common traffic violations in Lebanon, according to a week's worth of citations compiled by the Lebanon police department.

Once a week the department submits a list to local newspapers.

The report for the week of Monday, Aug. 18, to Sunday, Aug. 24, shows that of the 79 total tickets issued, 28 were for speeding.

Twelve of those tickets were for violations of 11 to 20 miles per hour above the speed limit.

Lebanon police Capt. Mike Schulte said that speeding is one of the primary safety-oriented violations that Lebanon police seek to prevent.

"Speeding obviously directly contributes to motor vehicle accidents," he said.

Areas where drivers are often caught speeding include highways 34 and 20 entering town, Oak and Grant streets, and Airport Road, he said.

The police also heavily patrol school zones to protect pedestrians.

The base fine for speeding is $97 unless you're going more than 10 mph over the limit; then it jumps to $145.

During the week of Aug. 18-24, seven tickets for failure to use a safety belt were issued, at a cost of $97 each. There were also six tickets for driving while suspended, at $427 each.

Other results include seven tickets for driving without a license, six for driving uninsured and six for failure to carry proof of insurance, all of which carry a $242 base fine.

Three tickets were issued for unlawful use of a disabled parking space, at a cost of $360 each.

There was one DUII.

Lebanon municipal court clerk Niki Hubbard said the base fines are just that, and could go up or down depending on the ticket recipient's compliance with the justice system.
