Sweet Home City Council to pick new mayor

SWEET HOME- The Sweet Home City Council will hold a special meeting on Saturday morning to elect a new mayor. In November, Mayor Craig Fentiman and council incumbent Bob McIntire were re-elected, and Scott McKee Jr. and Eric Markell were elected to their first council seats. The mayor is decided by a vote within the council. The meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. at the City Hall Annex, 1140 12th Ave.

Third Force to hold annual meeting Monday

Ken Haines, president of Western Resource Trading Corporation, will be the guest speaker at the Third Force for Forestry luncheon at noon Monday at Bing's Kitchen in Lebanon.

Haines' company mills hardwood logs for special orders.

This will be the annual meeting for the Third Force for Forestry and includes election of new officers. The nomination committee has compiled a suggested list of candidates and nominations will be accepted from the floor.

Lunch orders will be taken starting at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $7.60 and includes a tip.

Story time resumes at Jefferson Public Library

Story time will be held at the Jefferson Public Library, 128 N. Main, beginning Thursday at 11 a.m. The program, which includes stories, music and movement, is geared for ages 2-5, but any age can attend.

The programs last about 30 minutes. Time is allowed for discussion after the program. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The programs will be held weekly until March 22 and will resume after spring break.

The story times will be presented by Louise Meyers, who has many years exerience as a children's librarian and storyteller. She has developed programs designed to encourage children to participate in songs and stories that help with language development, early literacy and beginning phonemics in a relaxed atmosphere.

The program will offer guidelines to help parents become their child's "first teacher." A variety of handouts and materials provided by the Department of Education will be availble for free. Call 327-3826 for more information.

LBCC schedules orientation sessions

Informational orientation sessions for Linn-Benton Community College's accelerated training programs in phlebotomy, veterinary technology, pharmacy technician and the diagnostic imaging program will be held the first Wednesday of each month from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Willamette Hall, room 120, at the main campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. S.W., Albany.

The programs and courses prepare students for entry-level employment in a variety of fields that have a career ladder for advancement.

These state-approved certificate programs can be completed in times ranging from 15 weeks to 18 months, depending on the program. Students in any accelerated/short-term training over 14 weeks are eligible for financial aid.

Public invited to MLK event Thursday

CORVALLIS - The City of Corvallis MLK Commission invites the public to its annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Majestic Theater, 115 S.W. Second St.

This year's event will feature Kenneth Little Hawk, a Native American storyteller, keynote speaker, recording artist and actor.

Little Hawk will give a presentation on the theme "Building the Beloved Community." Closing entertainment will be provided by Absolute, a group of five women.
