Albany youth club a finalist for state award

The Boys & Girls Club of Albany was one of a handful of finalists picked to compete for the Oregon Department of Education Outstanding Community/School Partnership Award.

The club was nominated by its partner, the Greater Albany Public Schools.

"The partnership the club has with the local schools is stronger than ever, and Albany kids directly benefit from this relationship," said Ashley Wester, club branch director. "We are excited for the opportunities the future may hold."

Only nominated partnerships were invited to apply for the award that recognizes a dedicated mission, diverse participants and partnerships, sustainable funding, meaningful programs and attainable goals.

Thank-you barbecue set for Guard in Lacomb

LACOMB - Volunteers and members of the Oregon Army National Guard helping with a soccer field project at Lacomb School will be treated to a thank-you barbecue starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the school.

Members of the 224th Engineers out of Albany spent two weeks working on the soccer field and now are shifting their attention to creating a baseball/softball field on the east side of the school. The backstop, saved by the Lebanon Community School District, is coming from the former Queen Anne Elementary School.

LHS alum receives award from Washington AG

A Lebanon High School alumnus was honored Monday with an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Washington state attorney general, Rob McKenna.

Bert Paul, who graduated from LHS in 1970 and now lives in Lacey, Wash., works in the juvenile dependency section of the Social and Health Services Division of the attorney general's office. Previously he served in the torts division and mental health section, and he's also worked as a deputy prosecutor in Cowlitz County, Wash.

Paul has degrees from the University of Oregon and Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis.

Bookstore plans Jeopardy-style event for kids

Super Saturday Smackdown, an event where kids of all ages will square off Jeopardy-style to answer questions about their favorite books, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at Waldenbooks in the Heritage Mall.

New grief support group to begin July 1

Beginning July 1, Samaritan Evergreen Hospice will host a free grief support group. The group, led by a counselor or social worker, provides ongoing support for people grieving the death of someone they care about. Their loss need not be recent or related to hospice.

The group will meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and the third Sunday of the month from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
