The late nights and early mornings are getting more frequent and intense as filming starts on the movie "Extremely Used Cars: There Is No Hope," directed by Mark Donnell of Albany.
The movie, being filmed at several places in Corvallis and Albany, including South Pacific Auto Sales and Lakeshore Lanes, is a loose sequel to the 1980 film "Used Cars," starring Kurt Russell.
Filming at South Pacific got under way Wednesday, and Donnell figured Thursday's shooting would go until 1 a.m. They are a little behind schedule due to a camera issue, but Donnell is not worried.
Russell lookalike Louis Vanni plays the part of Rudolph "Rudy" Russo, the main character in the 1980 film.
In the latest movie, the main character, used car salesman Chip Douglas, played by Donnell himself, is a chemically imbalanced schizophrenic who was subjected to the highest concentrations of LSD you can be exposed to and still survive. He daydreams about killing his customers.
"It is a risky script," Donnell admits. "It's a young person type of film."
Donnell did not want to reveal too much about the film itself, so he wouldn't ruin the story for the public.
This is the 14th screenplay for Donnell but the first one he has taken all the way to the filming stage.
"It's my baby," he said.
Matt Umberger, the general manager at South Pacific, is excited for the company and for his first role in a movie.
"I am playing the part of officer number one," he said. "It is a small role towards the end of the movie."
For the production, Donnell purchased a 7,000-square-foot to house their sets. He's built all the props for the movie himself.
When the film is finished, Donnell plans to take it to the Sundance Film Festival, which is where "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" and "Napoleon Dynamite" got their starts.
