Two West Albany High School students were elected to office for the 2010 session of Oregon Boys State, to be held at the University of Oregon in June. Both will be seniors this fall.
Jacob Potter, the son of Michael and Mary Potter, was elected governor. Tucker Keuter, son of Jeff and Marcy Keuter, was elected as the incoming secretary of state.
This year's 73rd session of the American Legion Oregon Boys State came to a close on June 20. One hundred forty-four high school juniors received diplomas for a week of involvement in a civics camp that teaches city, county and state government.
In addition to electing city, county and state officials, citizens learned how to write a bill and get it passed through the legislative process. The students also dealt with solving city and county problems.
Guest speakers included Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul De Muniz; Secretary of State Kate Brown; Treasurer Ben Westlund; Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian; keynote speaker Sen. Ted Ferrioli; Rep. Andy Olson; Rep. Dennis Richardson; Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs Director Jim Willis; Springfield Mayor Sid Lieken; Lane County Commissioner Bill Dwyer; Lane County District Attorney Alex Gardner; Lane County Clerk Annette Newingham; Attorney David Doyle of Salem; and lobbyists Jim Welsh and Mac McDonald.
American Legion Post 10 of Albany sponsored the following students:
