The Albany fire and police departments have given out about 300 coupons over the past three days for free dessert at McDonald's to reward kids who wear bicycle helmets.
Those in need of a helmet were given information on how to get a free one through the Albany Fire Department, which has a year-round program to fit people with helmets.
Helmets are available at the fire administration office on the second floor of City Hall, 333 Broadalbin St. S.W.
"We wanted to reward people for doing the right thing," said AFD spokeswoman Wanda Omdahl.
She said the fire department has given out all 200 of its coupons, while the police department has given out an additional 100. She estimated about 200 information cards for free helmets were dispensed.
Though helmet use is only mandatory for children 16 and under in Oregon, Omdahl added that interested adults may come to the office for a helmet fitting as well.
