All 45 cats seized by the Linn County Sheriff's Office from a Century Drive home on Saturday eventually will be in good enough condition to be adopted, said Chris Storm, executive director of SafeHaven Humane Society in Albany.
The scruffy-looking cats will be neutered, given their shots, undergo grooming and be plumped up with food to make them ready for new homes, she said.
The cats were taken to the shelter after deputies removed them from the home at 38432 Century Drive following a report of animal neglect.
The cats were malnourished and dehydrated. Most need medical attention for abscesses, urine scald, and eye and ear infections, Storm said. One kitten probably will lose an eye because of an infection.
Their owner, Jean Primrose, 51, was charged with 45 counts of second-degree animal neglect. She is scheduled to appear in Linn County Circuit Court at 1:15 p.m. Sept. 16, Undersheriff Bruce Riley said.
He said Primrose, who lives with her elderly parents, was cited in July 2004 for the neglect of 11 cats.
Storm said the animals in Saturday's seizure range in age from 3 weeks to adults.
"We age cats by looking at their teeth, and these cats' teeth are in such bad shape it is hard to tell their age," she said. "Once they start getting care, they all will look beautiful."
Several of the cats were placed in foster care, and because of crowded conditions at the shelter, nine were taken to the Willamette Humane Society in Salem and five to the Oregon Humane Society in Portland.
"We're looking for other humane societies to take some, too," Storm said. "We are so crowded here that some of the cats must stay in crates."
SafeHaven needs more foster parents. Four of the cats are feral and would make good barn cats.
Financial help would be appreciated, she said, as would bags of Kirkland cat food and non-clumping cat litter.
SafeHaven is supported entirely by donations, adoption fees and fundraising events. Shelter hours are noon to 5 p.m. Saturday through Monday and noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The shelter is at 33071 Highway 34 in Albany.
