Investigators still aren't saying whether a robbery suspect had a gun or fired one when he was shot and wounded Wednesday by an Albany police detective.
After being treated at the Corvallis hospital, Brandon Lee Maxfield, 22, was lodged in the Linn County Jail Thursday afternoon. He is being charged with multiple counts of first- and second-degree robbery.
Maxfield also had an outstanding warrant in Linn County for failure to comply on an original charge of carrying a concealed weapon and a failure to comply warrant from Lebanon Municipal Court for driving under the influence of intoxicants.
Just hours before the shooting, police had released Maxfield's name, saying he was a suspect in a string of Albany business holdups.
Capt. Eric Carter, a spokesman for the Albany Police Department, said that on Wednesday, nine detectives went to 118 Seventh Ave. S.W. after getting a tip that Maxfield might arrive there. Maxfield did show up and went inside the house just before 12:30 p.m.
Detectives placed themselves around the house. Three were armed with AR-15 rifles and others had handguns drawn.
When Maxfield came back outside, detectives identified themselves as police and told him to get on the ground.
Maxfield went back inside and out the back door.
"He was confronted by Detective (Glenn) Fairall, who did fire a single round," Carter said.
Maxfield was shot with an AR-15 rifle. Police are not saying where the bullet hit.
Maxfield was taken into custody in the back yard of a neighboring house at 124 Seventh Ave. S.W.
Whether Maxfield threatened police either verbally or physically remains under investigation, Carter said.
Based on the level of potential threat that a suspect in armed robberies presents, it's not unusual for police to arm themselves with rifles, Carter said.
Maxfield's girlfriend had driven him to the house but stayed in the car when he went inside. She was detained by police, interviewed and later released.
Oregon State Police is investigating the shooting.
Fairall is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome. He has been with the Albany Police Department since 1992 and is currently serving a second stint in the detectives division.
Maxfield is the suspect in these Albany robberies: Big 5 Sporting Goods on Tuesday, H&A Market on Monday, the Peabody's antique and gift store Feb. 6, Fast Break Market on Jan. 19, and the Fox Den on Santiam Highway S.E. on Jan. 11.
The holdups account for nearly half of the robberies that have occurred in Albany since the first of the year. These robberies and others remain under investigation by Albany police.
