HARRISBURG - Linn County sheriff's deputies are investigating a single-vehicle crash Thursday that killed a 23-year-old Marcola man.
Rustan James Johnston was a passenger in a 2004 Ford pickup, which went off the road on Priceboro Drive near Sommerville Loop, about five miles southeast of Harrisburg.
The pickup left the road at an 'S' curve and rolled several times in a grass field. Johnston was ejected and died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.
The driver, Casey Douglas Kelley, 23, of Harrisburg, received minor injuries. He was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene for evaluation.
Deputies received the call at 9:46 p.m. Sheriff Tim Mueller said alcohol and excessive speed appear to be factors in the crash.
After being released from the hospital, Kelley was arrested and lodged in the Linn County Jail. He has been charged with DUII, Manslaughter II and Reckless Driving. Kelley's bail is set at $59,100.00.
The Linn County Major Accident Investigation Team assisted at the scene. Priceboro Drive was closed for 4 ½ hours during the investigation.
Huston-Jost Funeral Home of Lebanon transported the deceased pending further arrangements.
