September is library card sign-up month, and Albany residents of all ages are encouraged to apply for a card during that time.

Library cards are free to anyone who lives within the Albany city limits. Residents may apply at the main library, 1390 Waverly Drive S.E., or the downtown Carnegie Library, 302 Ferry St. S.W.

Individuals who apply for their first Albany library card in September will receive a library book bag and related items.

"Albany Public Library wants to make sure that Albany children, especially, are among the two-thirds of Americans who carry the smartest card of all - a library card," library Director Ed Gallagher said.

"A library card has always been the most important school supply of all. Kids can come to the library to get homework help and check out books, but they can also check out free music, DVDs, and use the Internet to make after-school life a little more fun," he said.
