Firefighters from Tangent and Albany responded to a garage fire on McFarland Road at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
No one was injured.
The water pump on the first unit at the scene, a Tangent engine, malfunctioned and Albany was called to assist.
Tangent Assistant Fire Chief Cary Vonasek said virtually no smoke was visible upon arrival.
"It was a very quick, clean knock down," he said.
Most of the damage, which was minimal, was caused by smoke, he added.
"A few personal items were lost," Vonasek said. "The fire was kept to a very, very small area."
He said he did not have a monetary estimate for damages.
The cause of the fire was undetermined as of this morning, though judging from the burn pattern, firefighters believe it may have originated from a waste can in the garage.
The homeowner, who did not wish to be named, said her family also owns the home next door and just moved into this one in September.
She said the damage appeared to be limited to the garage and the room above it, an office.
Firefighters were at the scene for about an hour and 20 minutes.
