Library announces Clever Cooks winners

Twenty entrants celebrated the 23rd year of the Albany Public Library's Clever Cooks Contest on Saturday, Feb. 24. Judges Rosalind Robbins and Linda Griffis of Greater Albany Public Schools and Matt Bennett, owner and chef at Sybaris, appraised the cooking of this year's entrants.

Winners, ages 7 to 9: Kaley Schmidt, apple praline tarts; David Ropp, glazed peanut butter cups; and Elizabeth Clark, piccolo pizzas.

Winners, ages 10 to 18: Kianna Johnson, butterscotch sandwich cookies; Ali Bond, tiramisu toffee dessert; and Hannah Brown, lasagna.

Prizes were provided by Waldenbooks, Ciddici's Pizza, Little Caesar's, Jaguar Cars, and the Oregon State Ready to Read Grant.

Clever Cooks XXIV is planned for Feb. 23, 2008.

Dental clinic planned for low-income youth

United Way of Linn County, Linn-Benton Community College and the Oregon Dental Foundation will sponsor a youth dental screening Friday, March 2, in the dental clinic at LBCC's Health Occupations building on campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd., Albany.

Eligible kids must come from families that meet federal low-income standards. All youths must be accompanied by a guardian at their screening appointment.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Contact the United Way at 926-5432 to make an appointment.

Workforce board plan available for comment

The Local Strategic Unifying Workforce Plan and Contract of the Linn, Benton, Lincoln Workforce Investment Board is available for public comment through March 30.

The plan is the product of a regional planning process that involved all the local Workforce partners and the Workforce Investment Board.
