Poker tournament will aid ABC House

ABC House, a child abuse assessment center, is hosting a fundraising poker tournament this weekend at the Linn County Fair & Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road N.E.

Doors open at 10 a.m. Saturday and play begins at noon. The buy-in is $100.

Freshmen start school day before others

First day of school for Lebanon High School freshmen will be Sept. 2. First day of school for sophomores, juniors and seniors will be Sept. 3. Start time is 8:15 a.m.

Shooters to wear period dress

Oregon Old West Shooting Society will host the 2008 Oregon State Single Action Shooting Society Championship from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Albany Rifle and Pistol Club, which is east of Shedd on Boston Mill Road, just east of I-5.

More than 250 competitors are expected. Shooters dress in 1800s period clothing, shoot single action guns and have a registered alias.

Guard seeks gift cards

The Oregon National Guard is collecting donations of gift cards and certificates, which have become a valuable resource for the families of deployed Oregon National Guard soldiers.

With the start of the school year only a few weeks away, children of these soldiers need school supplies and clothing. Gift cards distributed by the Family Program Chaplains help them get what they need while their parent is deployed.

If you would like to help, send a gift card or certificate for any amount from a store that sells school supplies or clothes to: General Mike Caldwell, Oregon National Guard, P.O. Box 14350, Salem, OR 97309.

Democrats plan food drive

Linn and Benton County Democrats will hold a food drive Saturday for the Linn-Benton Food Share. Drop-off sites will be set up from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Albany at Safeway and Ray's Food Place, and in Corvallis at Richey's Market and the Circle Boulevard Safeway.
