A motor escort will bring the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling Wall to Albany on Tuesday, and the community is invited to help welcome it.
The wall, presented by the Linn County Veterans Memorial Association, will arrive around 12:30 p.m., exiting I-5 south at Santiam Highway, traveling east to Price Road, then north to Timber-Linn Memorial Park's south parking lot, near the Linn County Veterans Memorial.
The Albany Visitors Association is challenging the residents to line the south end of Price Road as the escort comes in. The Linn County Sheriff's Posse and Patriot Guard will assist with parking.
The intersections of I-5 and Santiam, Santiam and Spicer Drive, and Santiam and Price will be closed temporarily to allow the wall to pass through.
The south end of Price Road will also be closed briefly while the wall is moved into place.
In addition to the wall, the weeklong tribute will include a "field of honor" of more than 1,000 flags in tribute to Oregon veterans; dedication of the wall and the field of honor; a candlelight ceremony; a ride of honor; Oregon Honorable Service Medal ceremonies; a poker ride with fly-over and introductions; a church service; a warrior medal ceremony and a second Oregon Honorable Service Medal ceremony. (For a complete schedule, see page A2).
The tribute will be open to the public 24 hours a day from Wednesday through Sunday.
The city of Albany is co-sponsoring the tribute.
To accommodate the tribute, the basketball courts and disc golf course at Timber-Linn will be closed through Monday.
