CORVALLIS - The Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL), now in its fifth year, is offering a new schedule of classes for fall term. Classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 4515 S.W. West Hills Road.
ALL, a program of the OSU Alumni Association, is a self-funded, peer-led membership organization open to any mature adult. No particular experience or educational background is required, all you need is a genuine interest in lifelong learning.
Classes are offered weekly on a wide variety of topics in the fields of science, history, politics, philosophy, issues and ideas, fine arts and cultures of the world. Outstanding presenters are drawn from the university and the community.
Fall term classes in the "Issues and Ideas" strand include a session on fiscal and revenue issues in Oregon, led by former Oregon state legislators Tony Van Vliet and Cliff Trow. In another session, a representative from the League of Women Voters will present a non-partisan look at this year's ballot measures. Helen Berg, mayor of Corvallis, will share her thoughts on the state of the city.
Indian nations is the culture of study this fall. Classes are offered in tribal history, Native American foods, federal Indian policies, Native American beadwork, Indian legends, and the social and economic condition of the American Indian nations. The Gala Dinner this term will feature Native American dishes.
Fine arts offerings include jazz piano history, an exploration of the music of Franz Schubert, poetry, public art, pottery and several book reviews.
History, politics and philosophy sessions will include the ethics of immigration, the good news and bad news about the economics of health care, and an exploration of Abraham Lincoln's difficulties with political rivalries. Dave Bernell, from political science at OSU, will analyze mid-term congressional elections.
The science strand offers classes on fish and wildlife restoration, the physics of music, and an assessment of the NASA space program, along with others on transparent electronics, DNA structure and indoor air hazards.
