N. Albany neighborhood meeting changed

The fledgling North Albany Neighborhood Association has rescheduled its second organizational meeting. It will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 25, at the Fairmount Grange Hall, 835 North Albany Road N.W. Previously the meeting had been planned at North Albany Middle School, but that location turned out to be unavailable.

Dirk Olsen, one of the organizers, said the group hopes to adopt bylaws at the meeting. The association is being organized to strengthen the voice of North Albany on issues including traffic management and development.

Memorial set for teen killed crossing street

The family of Salvador Sanchez, 17, who died May 30, has planned a memorial service for 6 p.m. Saturday at the Family Worship Center, 515 Queen Ave. S.E., Albany.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to help the family with the funeral arrangements. A fund has been established at all branches of Umpqua Bank in Salvador's name.

Salvador, a senior at West Albany High School, was killed when he was struck by a pickup while trying to cross Santiam Road Southeast.

Horseback documentary crew nearing Bend

Bill Inman of Lebanon, his horse Blackie and a documentary film crew including his nephew and videographer, Dallas Pesola, adopted son and web designer Jonathan Campos and his wife Brenda, are headed to Bend this week after leaving Sisters last Saturday.

Inman left Lebanon during the Strawberry Festival at the beginning of June for an eight-month trip on horseback to Hendersonville, N.C. His goal is to capture the "real America" through stories of "interesting places, individuals, groups and history that inspire pride and lift the spirit," according to press releases sent to local news media by his wife from the film crew's trailer traveling with Inman.

"The trip has only just begun," Inman said. So far, he added, he has met "some interesting people and seen some interesting places."

Quilt show will feature bed turning

The Lebanon Santiam Scrappers Quilt Guild will present a new event on Saturday: a bed turning, an old-time quilting tradition wherein quilts are layered on top of one another and turned back one by one to reveal another pattern. Antique and family quilts will be displayed, and stories of quilters' lives, quilting techniques and skills used to sew the coverlets will be told.

The Quilt Bed Turning, Mini Show and Sale is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Santiam Place, 139 S. Main St., Lebanon. Scheduled bed turnings are in the garden at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Admission is free, with small gifts and seating provided. There will also be quilting demos and art quilts for sale.

The quilt show is part of an antiques and yard art sale. Santiam Place's gardens will be filled with vintage, heritage antiques and older collectables. Vendors and food booths will be in the backyard gardens.
