Three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee to speak

Internationally known teacher, author and peace activist/organizer Kathy Kelly will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 4515 S.W. West Hills Road. The title of her presentation is "Eyewitness to War, Witness for Peace."

Kelly helped initiate Voices in the Wilderness, a campaign to end U.N./U.S. sanctions against Iraq, and has personally made 24 trips to Iraq since 1996, delivering medicine and other humanitarian aid. She has served many months of prison time for acts of civil disobedience, and is the recipient of many prestigious awards including three nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.

This event is co-sponsored by the Just Peace Committee of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and Veterans for Peace, Chapter 132.

LEBANON

Head Start kids to get book from teacher

Each of the 392 students at Kidco Head Start will receive a free book during a home visit by their teacher, the program announced, with funds provided by the Target Community Foundation.

Kidco Head Start provides pre-kindergarten training to 3- and 4-year-olds who qualify for low family income or special needs.

Kidco Head Start has nine centers in Linn, Benton and Marion counties.

Homeowners invited to meeting on mortgages

United First Financial will host a meeting on mortgages from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Santiam Place, 139 Main St. Financial planner Allyn Edwards, mortgage broker Reno Warren, and mortgage acceleration specialist James Stubbs will help homeowners understand their mortgage payments.

Operation Santa seeks donations for troops

Operation Santa USMC is seeking donations of items for Christmas in a Box to send to deployed troops. The local goal is to provide for 120 soldiers in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan and 180 Marines in Iraq. All of them are in remote locations with little-to-no amenities.

Donation sites are: Curves for Women in Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon and Sweet Home; Citizen's Bank, Umpqua Bank and Jan's Books in Lebanon; and Linn-Co Federal Credit Union in Albany, Lebanon and Sweet Home.

A list of suggested items are available at each donation site.

Monetary donations can be sent to Operation Santa, P.O. Box 874, Lebanon, OR 97355.
