Sarah May Delany Osborn

Sarah May Delany Osborn, 84, of Scio passed away Monday at her son's home in Lebanon.

She was born in Ellensburg, Wash., to George K. and Magdalena (Messemer) Delany.

Sarah grew up on the family wheat farm in Kahlotus, Wash., until the age of 9, when her mother passed away. She then went to live with her aunt in Ellensburg. She graduated from high school in Ellensburg and attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., where she earned bachelor's degrees in biology and chemistry.

She moved to Seattle, where she married Carl Osborn on Feb. 9, 1948. The couple had two children. Carl passed away on May 31, 1956. She attended Edison Technical School and became a licensed practical nurse. Sarah moved to Yakima, Wash., in 1958 where she lived for more than 40 years. While in Yakima, she worked as a nurse, a social worker and a media specialist at Yakima Valley Community College.

She enjoyed raising rabbits and had been the Secretary of the Rabbit Division at the Central Washington State Fair for many years. Sarah had also belonged to the Business and Professional Women while in Yakima and held several local and state offices. She moved to Scio in 2000, where she was a supporter of the Boys & Girls Club.

Sarah loved music and was a concert level pianist. She was also a world traveler and had visited places including China, Africa, Australia and England.

She is survived by her son, Donald Carl Osborn and wife Rita of Lebanon; daughter Lin M. Preston and husband Mason of Lewisburg, W.Va.; grandchildren Andrew Preston of Seattle, Devin Preston of Lewisburg, Alana Preston of Lewisburg, Christina Olson of Scio, David Thomas of Kennewick, Wash., Laurie Thomas of Olympia, Wash., Brian Thomas of Lewisburg, Don Thomas of Jensen, Utah, Ted McDougall of Sheridan, and Cherie Young of Sheridan; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Osborn; brothers George and Gilbert Delany; and sister Winnefred Besecker.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice for the excellent care and support they provided during this difficult time.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home in Lebanon.
