Dec. 20, 1940 - April 3, 2009
Eldred "Eldy" Lowell Myers, 68, died Friday.
He was born to Edward Lowell Myers and Wanita Mae Propst-Myers-Haugen in a little green house eight miles east of Scio. Enid (Dolecheck) was later born in Scio, and after the family moved to Albany, Carol (Earl) was born. Eldred was the prefect "big brother," watching out for his sisters. His family was always important to him.
Eldred started school at Price Grade School and later graduated from Albany Union High School in 1959. In high school, Eldred excelled as an athlete, wrestling and playing baseball. He was competitive throughout his life, putting forth his best effort. Through the years Eldred enjoyed water skiing, fly fishing, white water rafting, scuba diving, golf and especially flying planes. He immersed himself in each activity.
After high school, Eldred worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Albany for a short time, going to Oregon College of Education in Monmouth at the same time. He then worked for Western Electric, and while working there was drafted into the Army. He was stationed in Korea in 1964. After the Army, he returned to Western Electric and later transferred to AT&T. He stayed with AT&T for 42 years in the telephone business working in Salem, Albany, Corvallis and Portland. During this time, Eldy was married to Marylou Surgeon and they became parents of Lisa Ann and Amanda Lynette. Marylou and Eldy were later divorced. Eldred was then married to Peggy on Nov. 27, 1992, in Houston, Texas, and together they enjoyed travel and fly fishing.
After his retirement, Eldred worked part time at the Summerfield Golf Course, where he was able to play golf three to six days a week, which he felt was perfect for retirement.
Eldred is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Barthel-Myers of Tigard; daughters Lisa Myers of Portland, and Amanda Beard of Beaverton; and sisters Enid Dolecheck of Cary, N.C., and Carol Earl of The Dalles.
Eldred had lived a great life, making many friends along the way. He wanted to express his thanks to those who lent their support as he battled cancer this year.
A memorial gathering will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 24, at the Summerfield Club House, 10650 S.W. Summerfield Drive, Tigard.
