Aug. 8, 1923 - July 28, 2008
William H. Gorman, 84, of Albany died of cancer at the Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.
He was born in Taunton, Mass., to Harold F. and Cecelia Gorman. On Oct. 8, 1941, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Shortly after completing basic training, William was stationed in Bremerton, Wash. There he met and married Evelyn M. Novington, his wife of 66 years. William was called to duty in the African Middle Eastern Theater and then at Normandy Beach. He was recognized for his time served by earning three service stars, a bronze star, a purple heart and unit citations on Dec. 10, 1945. William was honorably discharged from the Army.
He moved to Oregon where he and his wife raised their two sons. After working for Western Craft Paper Mill in Albany for 28 years, William spent 24 years enjoying his well deserved retirement by spending time with his family, bird watching and doing yard work.
William was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Albany; sons Pat of Dallas and wife Yong, and Tom of Salem; grandchildren Juliy, Joni, Jason, Linda, Tina, Corey and Cheray; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions go to a hospice or charity of one's choice in honor of William.
