Dick M. Berry, 78, of Scio died Monday at Samaritan Albany General Hospital.

Dick was born in Albany to John Medley and Alice Veronica (Colcord) Berry. He attended Scravel Hill and Dever grade schools, later attending junior high and high school in Albany.

Dick spent two years in the Army, one of which was in England. He repaired military equipment and built a runway. After returning home, he worked for Simpson Timber for 33 years. He did a wide variety of tasks while working there, from working on a pond to laying plywood. He eventually became a millwright there, and repaired all kinds of equipment.

In 1959 Dick moved to Scio where he raised polled Herefords for 40 years. He collected old tractors to use for hay and other chores around the farm. He taught his grandchildren to drive his old machines.

Dick is survived by his wife, Gloria (Sturgis) of Scio; daughter Cynthia and husband Harold Compton of Jefferson; son Nathan Berry and wife Janet of Gresham; grandsons Justin Compton and fiancé Amanda "Mandy" Renninger of Albany, Andrew Berry of Gresham, and Nicolas and Joshua Berry, both of Washington; granddaughter Melinda and husband Garrett Yutzie of Jefferson; brother Kenneth Berry and wife Mary Jean of Redmond; and several nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Michele Berry; parents Jack and Alice Berry; and sisters Jackie Zuhlke of Albany and Barbara Hammond of Lebanon.

At Dick's request there will be no services.
