Earl Vickers, 98, of Albany passed away Sunday.

Earl was born in Burns to Jesse E. and Mary (DeMaris) Vickers and was the eldest of six children. He was raised on a cattle ranch east of Burns. He married Alberta Myrtle Parker and had two daughters, Verna and Anita.

Earl and Alberta were married for 67 years and spent several of them in Crane, where Earl had a trucking business. They moved to Burns, where he worked at Ranch Supply Hardware Store and later for the U.S. Postal Service. They moved to LaGrande, where he was a mechanic for International Harvester. He and Alberta moved to Eugene in 1954 and worked until he retired. Soon after Alberta died in 1995, he moved to Quail Run Retirement Center in Albany and was living there until the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his wife; brothers Lyle and Darrell Vickers; sisters Velma McCauley and VeLora Sheppard; daughter Verna B. Irwin; and grandson Stephen Irwin.

He is survived by his daughter, Anita E. Smith and husband Howard of Yakima, Wash.; sister Erma Zumwalt of Bend; nephews Ron Sheppard and his wife, and Eston Vickers and wife Beverly; son-in-law Lee Irwin of Royal City, Wash.; grandchildren Mark Irwin and wife Anneke, Paul Irwin and wife Glenda, Ruth Ballard and husband Jim, Lynn Sides and husband Gregory, Sarah Mato and husband Stephen, Michael Smith and wife Nancy, and Chris Smith; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday at Lane Memorial Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at noon Saturday at Lane Memorial Funeral Home.
