Amos B. Gerig, 86, of Scio died Saturday at his home.

Amos was born in Albany, the son of Amos C. and Lydia (Boshart) Gerig. He attended the Lakeview School near Cottonwoods.

During World War II, Amos served in the Civilian Public Service and worked in Belton, Mont., where he helped clear right of way for the Highway to the Sun and delivered milk in Lodi, Calif. After the war, Amos worked with a logging crew that cleared Green Peter Reservoir and power line corridor rights of way at Detroit. He worked throughout his career as a farmer, rancher and logger. He liked his job of falling timber and working in the woods.

After retiring, he did a lot of fishing and hunting. He and Louise served as volunteer hosts for a couple of seasons at campgrounds from Eastern Oregon to the Coast. He had been a long-time member of the Fairview Mennonite Church.

Amos was married to Louise Nofziger on April 26, 1945, at the Fairview Mennonite Church.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Gordon Stutzman, Dan Stutzman, Harry Gerig and Wayne Gerig; sisters Dorotha Detweiler, Blanche Neuschwander, Mary Krabill and Clara Krabill; twin infant siblings, Lester and Esther Stutzman; and grandchildren Bernice Foley and Eli Gerig.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise, of Scio; sons Roy Gerig of Salem, Lonnie Gerig of Albany, and Rick and wife Julie Gerig of Lebanon; daughters Ramona Gerig of Philomath, and Norma and husband Mickey Foley of Salem; daughter-in-law LeVera Gerig of Salem; brother Percy Gerig of Lebanon; sister Wilma Sanderson of Portland; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Fairview Mennonite Church. Burial will follow in the Fairview Mennonite Cemetery.
