Arthur V. "Jack" Gilbert, 96, of Lebanon died Sunday at his home.

Jack was born in the Berlin area of Lebanon, the son of Edgar "Ned" and Josephine (McKinney) Gilbert. He attended Berlin Grade School and graduated from Lebanon High School. He worked in grocery stores for several years before starting his own store "Gilbert Super Market" in Sweet Home. In 1955 he started Gilbert Logging of Lyons which later became Lakeline Logging. He expanded the Gilbert homestead in the Berlin area where he ranched, logged, grew crops, and raised livestock and llamas.

In addition to his work, he served as the Sweet Home Fire Chief for seven years, was a charter member of the Rotary Club, and a member of the Elks and Masonic Lodges of Lebanon for more than 50 years.

Jack married Doris Raber in 1939. They divorced. He later married Zel M. Burian in 1966.

Jack was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph L. Gilbert; and sisters Norma Jane Haworth and Violet Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Zel of Lebanon; son Steve Gilbert of Lebanon; daughter Mary and husband Gary Stevens of Albany; stepdaughters Judy and husband Roger Billings of Portland, and Jeanne and husband Richard Wright of Eugene; stepson Ron and wife Jennifer Burian of Madison, Wis.; niece Helen Brown and husband John Brown of Lebanon; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Southside Church of Christ, 196 Airport Road, Lebanon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, Lebanon Boys and Girls Club or Samaritan Evergreen Hospice, and sent in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, OR 97355.
