Carolyn Halstead, 74, of Albany died Tuesday morning at Samaritan Albany General Hospital following a stroke. Family and friends were by her side.

Carolyn was born in Baltimore, Md., to Paul and Ethel Hesser. As a child, her well-traveled family moved west. She graduated from Escondido High School in California, and from San Diego's Mercy College of Nursing.

On Sept. 2, 1955, she married Charles "Chuck" Halstead and they moved to Pocatella, Idaho, where he attended Idaho State University and she worked at the Bannock County Hospital.

In 1958 they moved to Oregon where he taught school and she began working at Samaritan Albany General Hospital. She later worked for the Albany School District until her retirement. They attended Albany's Eastside Christian Church for 40 years and recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

Carolyn was very active in her church and enjoyed RVing, gardening, reading and her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Chuck; sons David and wife Jennifer of Bothell, Wash., and Mike and wife Jeanette of Gresham; daughter Pat and husband Mark Fullerton of Redmond; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Eastside Christian Church, 1910 Grand Prairie Road. Gifts in memorial can be made to Eastside Christian Church.
