May 29, 1917 - June 20, 2009
Jewell "June" Fame Sorseth, 92, died Saturday.
June was born in Green Forest, Ark., to Martha Paddy and Mack McAllister. She had five sisters and one brother. She was raised in East Texas until the family moved to Idaho and eventually Milton-Freewater, where she graduated from high school.
She attended Oregon State College and worked for JC Penney in Albany where she met and married Julian Orlando "Jay" Sorseth. She worked at and managed the PX at Camp Adair during World War II.
June and Jay had two sons, Jason and James. James died in 1954 of leukemia. June managed the downtown liquor store until Jay's death in 1988. She retired in 1992.
June enjoyed playing the organ and piano and taught music and music theory. She painted and made jewelry, but her passion was collecting antiques and "objects of interest."
June is survived by Jason and Vicki Sorseth of Portland; granddaughters Jennifer Sorseth of Elmira, N.Y., and Tamara Broker of Portland; grandsons Matt, Paul and Kelsey Prenger of Portland; and sisters Glenna Corsen of San Jose, Calif., and Grace Records of Milton-Freewater.
A celebration of life will be at a later date. Memorial contributions to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice may be made in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 Washington St. S.W., Albany, OR 97321 (www.fisherfuneralhome.com).
