Richard Lee Borland, 75, of Lebanon died May 17 of Alzheimer's disease in Las Vegas, while en route to Oregon from Arizona.
He was born to Earl Charles and Pauline Borland in Calville, Wash., and was raised in Redland. After graduating from the eighth grade he logged with his dad and then joined the army during the Korean Was after turning 18 in 1951.
He married Donna Jean Verley of Oregon City in 1954 and was discharge from the Army in May 1955. They moved to Lebanon to raise their family of four. He drove a log truck, worked at Western Veneer, Copeland Lumber, Weebee Cabinet and John Cude Construction, and was a self-employed cabinet maker and finish carpenter before retiring in 2000. He then was a snowbird to Mesa, Ariz.
He enjoyed playing concertina and dancing to polka music, which he and Donna taught in Arizona, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Oregon, Washington and California for 24 years. He loved to go boating, water skiing, fly fishing on the Metolious River as one of the best fisherman on the river, hunting, mountain hiking, wilderness horseback riding, trail bike riding, and camping in campgrounds and wilderness areas.
His is survived by his wife of 53 years, Donna, of Arizona; sons Alan and wife Roxanne of Sisters, and RC and wife Pat of Lebanon; and grandchildren Nick of Lebanon, and Andy, Rachael and Erin with fiancé Matt Henderson, all of Albany.
Donations can be sent to an Alzheimer's association or hospice organization.
A memorial service was held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at the Lebanon Senior Center, 65 B Academy Way.
