Aug. 24, 1942 - Aug. 3, 2009

Vestie Collins, 67, of Seattle passed unexpectedly at the University of Washington Medical Center after her heart failed. She suffered a very long battle with rheumatoid arthritis; she is now resting pain free.

When her affliction affected her ability to obtain gainful employment, Vestie returned to college in her 40s and received a bachelor's degree from Oregon State University. After graduating, she spent some time doing volunteer work for a social services organization and then was hired as a crises counselor at a crises clinic. After that agency closed, she kept it running on her own.

Besides her choice of vocations, Vestie also helped many people who were down on their luck or otherwise in need of a nurturing home environment, often at the expense of her own needs. She was a very giving person.

She moved to Washington so her daughter could help care for her and resumed a life filled with optimistic dreams for the future. Vestie left a big void in this world at her passing. She was a strong advocate for senior's rights and for the rights of people with disabilities. She proved herself to be a persevering individual whether as a single mother assuming that many-faceted role as a trusted friend, and as a student dedicated to bettering herself and her family.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend. Vestie left a heritage to her family of never giving up, never complaining about her disability, caring for and nurturing her parents, and being a much-loved and trusted friend and sister.

Vestie received great joy from being with her special and wonderful grandchildren, Tyler French, Chelsea Collins and Hailey Desir. She delighted in the growth and antics of each special child as she was able to spend time with them. She grew especially close to Little Hailey who, like her older grandchildren, was the light of her life. She buoyed up a sinking sister and a cherished friend, tried to keep the extended family close and maintained a close friendship with many.

She is survived by her children, Kelley Desir and Craig Collins; grandchildren Tyler French, Chelsea Collins and Hailey Desir; sister Donna Ferguson; and brother and sister-in-law Bob and Ann Decker.

Vestie grew up in Albany and had many, so many, friends and family here. She was a member of the St. Mary's parish.

A celebration of Vestie's life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany. A luncheon will follow Mass in the reception area at the church.

Friends and family are welcome and encouraged to submit memories of Vestie in writing or in person at the church luncheon.
