James "Jim" Harvey Pinder, 94, of Lacomb died Monday at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center just before his 95th birthday.
A native Oregonian, he was born in Portland to Harvey and Rova (Simpson) Pinder. Jim spent the majority of his life in Oregon except for his time in the Navy. He grew up in the Portland and Beaverton areas and moved to Lacomb in the early 1920s, remaining there until his death. He married Helen Smith in Portland in 1934. She passed away on April 28, 1964. He later married Iona McKinney on May 12, 1967, in Lacomb.
As a descendent of Old Chief Joseph, he was proud of his Nez Perce Indian heritage. Jim brought a different perspective to life and lived his life to that philosophy, touching many lives. He was quietly generous and caring, yet firm in his beliefs.
He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and taking trips to the coast and mountains. He will be remembered as a talented and passionate man; whether it was with his fishing pole, his knife or his pencil. He was an artist and cherished lover of an adventurous life. This love for the outdoors continued in his work life, where he worked as a logger until his retirement in 1978.
He was a life member of the Elks Lodge and also belonged to the Northwest Steelheaders Association.
He is survived by his wife, Iona Pinder of Lacomb; daughter Donalda Dodson of Salem; and many relatives and dear friends. Known as "Gramps" and "Great Pappa," his gentle strength, kindness, love, generosity, support and quiet knowing will be greatly missed and cherished by his seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen; his son, James H. Pinder Jr.; and his brother, George Pinder.
Viewing will be from
