The editorial cartoon at the top of this page is the kind of exaggeration that is the stock in trade of cartoonists. Like scores of similar drawings across the country, it makes the false claim that Hillary Clinton's tears helped her win the Democratic primary for president in New Hampshire.
But if you saw the video clip, you know she
didn't weep. Her eyes got a little misty and her voice broke ever so slightly and briefly when she answered someone's question about how she faced the hardships of campaigning.
What she said came across as over the top. She said that yes, it was pretty hard on her, but she tried hard to carry on and eat right and even exercise now and then, but what carried her through was her passion - her passion for turning the country around because, she said, it's headed in the wrong direction. Whether by design or not, it was the kind of response that might generate sympathy after her Iowa loss.
But unlike Ed Muskie so many years ago, she didn't actually shed any tears. (hh)
