Central Linn Cares
Central Linn School District has, for the past 13 years, been able to provide improved access to many health and social services to the students and families of the Brownsville, Halsey, and Shedd communities through Central Linn Cares.
Central Linn Cares develops and coordinates assistance programs of all kinds to ensure that the children in our rural area are fed, clothed, immunized and healthy. Providing access to these necessities means folks are on the other end to offer services and we would like to take this opportunity to thank some of them.
Brownsville's Samaritan Health physician, Diana Barron, with nurse practioner Danette Giboney, nurse Barbara Cleveland and physical therapist Terry Jordan of the Rebound Clinic give our students thorough and low-cost sports physicals on site at Central Linn High School. Sports physicals are required every two years for all students playing sports in Oregon's public high schools. Not having a physical can mean the difference between a student having the opportunity to participate or not. This physical can also prevent more serious health problems since most teens don't see a doctor on a regular basis.
Having a low-cost immunization clinic at Central Linn Elementary each August during our Back To School Fair means easy access to the required shots so important to keeping our children free of communicable disease. It also means we get to spend a day with our favorite nurse from Linn County Health Services, Karen Walker. Also at our Back To School Fair we offer free haircuts thanks to the kindness and generosity of hairstylists Sheila and Tonya Wingren.
And while we're on the subject of hair, keeping students at our elementary free from annoying head lice has been much easier since Natalie Walker, of Tech-Nu Labs of Albany, donates a safe and effective product we can pass on to parents.
And last but not least we want to thank Brownsville dentist Kirt Glenn, hygienist Margaret Lawson, and their dental assistants who give three full days a year and more than $10,000 worth of services and treatment annually to the children of the Central Linn community. Families without dental insurance often have to prioritize other necessities over dental treatment for their children. Dr. Glenn makes sure many uninsured children get the prevention and treatment they need.
These kind and generous community members are all scheduled to continue serving our children for the 2007-08 school year. We appreciate them so much.

Albany Fitwalkers
The Albany Fitwalkers Volkssport Club would like to thank several people and businesses for helping make our walk last Saturday a success:
Kim Sass and the hospital foundation helped greatly with advertising and printing fliers, providing the hospital for our start and finish point, and providing fruit ice-cream bars for the walkers.
Nazya, staff and residents from Timber View Care Center, for manning our checkpoint in Bryant Park, donating watermelon and walking the walk.
Costco donated cakes that were served to the walkers at the Rectory at St. Mary's, and to Fr. Betts and Shirley Homberg for arranging that respite for the walkers.
Also we want to thank the volunteers working at the carousel who opened early to show off what all is going on there. The Albany Regional Museum was also open for those who could take the time to browse through that historical museum. Plus the Monteith House opened early to provide a glimpse of Albany in the early days. We are proud of our city, and like to show it off to others.
Many businesses and residents along the route placed Welcome Walker fliers in their windows - that was a special touch of friendliness. Restaurants were involved, too, and Loafers extended a discount to walkers for lunch that day.
Our members are a hard-working group of folks who worked many hours to put on this walk, and fulfill our motto of Fun, Fellowship and Fitness. We meet the second Tuesday of each month at Alterra on Grand Prairie Road. The next walk we are sponsoring will be Oct. 20 at Springhill Cellars in North Albany.
For more information about our club, contact Rozy Weatherby at wrozy@yahoo.com or Helen McGovern at 926-3833.

Lebanon filled the boot
On Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3 and 4, the Lebanon Professional Firefighters conducted a charity fundraiser called "fill the boot" to raise money for the MDA or Jerry's kids.
I know for some of the people traveling through the area it may have been a little of an inconvenience and for that I apologize, but for the majority of the people that came through it did not seem to bother them.
We were able to raise $11,025 in those two days. I would like to thank you on behalf of myself and the rest of the firefighters for helping us raise a large sum of money for such a great cause. It was overwhelming the support we received from the community and the people traveling through on their way to the Oregon Jamboree in Sweet Home. We far exceeded our two-day goal of $6,000.
I would also like to thank the local merchants that supported us during those two days: Fore's Shop N Kart for the use of its parking lot; Lebanon Taco Bell for supplying much-needed water to the firefighters who were in front of their business collecting money in the hot sun, they very much appreciated that; and to the Lebanon Coffee Company for the ice-cold strawberry lemonade.
We plan on doing it again next year on the same days and hope to raise even more money and hope we have your support next year also. Thank you for the support and giving for such a great cause.
Michael Maynard, Lebanon
