If President-elect Obama is trying to show that he'll be president of all the people, he's making a better than average start.
Monday he met with John McCain in what looked like a cordial atmosphere and in a spirit of cooperation, which is exactly what is needed to provide a respite from the previous spirit of politics as war.
Sunday night on CBS' "60 minutes," Obama and his wife set exactly the right tone for the beginning of a new era in the White House. It was an interview about the personal side of this family, and the way they handled it, it could not help but make viewers like them and wish them the best.
Near the end of the interview, Obama made a point that sports fans around the country will appreciate regardless of their politics. He came out in favor of a playoff series to determine a national champion in college football.
This would clearly be better than the current championship system, which nobody understands. Even before he takes office, with that comment he took a good stand and scored a policy win. (hh)
