OK, Bird Lady from New Jersey (Mailbag, July 22), I'm in. Let's protect those birds. But let's really protect birds. OK, what shelter accepts cars for euthanasia? They kill millions of birds. Do we euthanize the bird feeders responsible for disease outbreaks that kill birds by the thousand? Should we chop down the radio and cell towers that kill birds by the thousand? Should we start smashing glass, everywhere we see it? Let's outlaw harvest equipment that kills everything alive in its path. Not sure what we'd eat then. What do we do with the airplanes? And the pesticide sprayers that kill everything a bird eats? And what in the world do we do about birds that kill birds?
TNR has little effect because few people do it so far. Again, lady, target those responsible, not those practicing TNR, who are saving millions of birds. I keep my cats contained. I build cat yards. Anyone can if I can. Be responsible, people, and fix your cats. Feral cats result from inhumane, irresponsible idiots, who don't fix their cats and let the offspring run wild or dump their unfixed cat. If you can't care for a cat, including its spay or neuter, don't get one. If you feed cats, their yours. Get them fixed.
Here's a thought, for creative tech people out there in the bad economy. Create a solution, something that is triggered by a specific cat action, that warns a bird. You'd be a hero and make millions.
