Property cleanup
On Friday, Aug. 15, about 20 people, some paid, some volunteering, cleared nearly half an acre at 330 Marilyn Street N.E. of 40 years of accumulated junk and overgrown brush.
The property was in violation of the Albany Municipal Code and posed a fire hazard to the neighborhood. After a long, hot, hard day's work, the junk is either gone or properly stored, blackberries are beaten back to manageable proportions, and a lot of fruit trees have been liberated to thrive.
This is a public thank you to everyone who helped out that day n Mike Davis and residents of Oxford House; Deputy Shane Soto and the Linn County Sheriff's inmate work crew; Dick Conolly, Gary Carlson, Francisco Santiago, and Jared Barnett of the City of Albany Parks Maintenance Division; Albany Police Community Resource Officer Sherri Jacobson; and Mayor Dan Bedore. Thanks also to PepsiCo for providing much-appreciated Gatorade.

Fallen firefighters
I would like to personally thank the people that made the black armbands for the memorial service for the fallen firefighters that were killed in the helicopter crash in Northern California.
They made 1,202 bands from Sunday to Wednesday. They measured, cut, sewed, trimmed threads, ironed and counted.
Thanks to Santiam Scrapper Quilt Guild members Peggy Christopherson, Marina Rosario, JoAnn Pope, JoAnn Dutton, Arline Pulliam, Linda Bretton and Ginny Kase.
Also thanks to Marjorie Mitchell and Leola Erwin for the use of their sergers. And thanks to Katie Stockwell and Carl Sylvester.
It couldn't have happened without all their hard work.
Many thanks!
Rusty Sylvester, Lebanon
Pop Warner physicals
The Linn Benton Pop Warner Board of Directors would like to thank the following health care professionals: Samuel Kaye, M.D.; Matt Bain, M.D.; Laura Ouellette, M.D.; Mark Bartlett, M.D.; Robin Lucero, R.N.; Linda Simms, R.N.; and Sherri Barker, M.A., for donating their time on Aug. 2 to provide low-cost physicals for more than 150 football players and cheerleaders from Linn, Benton, Marion and Polk counties.
We appreciate your compassion for area youth and your commitment to community service.
All proceeds from this sports physical clinic support the scholarship fund and Linn Benton Pop Warner's mission to allow every kid that wants to play football or cheer to be given that opportunity regardless of their financial hardship.

MDA Fill The Boot
I am writing on behalf of the the Lebanon Professional Firefighters, to thank the citizens of Lebanon and the surrounding areas and all of the out-of-town travelers who supported our annual MDA Fill The Boot fundraiser. This year was another sucess for us as we were able to raise $17,720 over two days, up from $11,020 last year. I can not tell you how proud I am of all the people who participated in this event, giving up there time to help raise money for such a good cause. It was amazing to me how much money we were able to raise, and how people went out of there way to donate money. We had single donations of $100 and several $50 dollar donations that are truly amazing to me. The Eugene Fire Department also did it's Fill The Boot the same weekend, and we were able to raise more money then they did. To me that is outstanding considering the number of people we have compared to them.
A big thanks also goes out to members of the community that made this possible for us. Shop N Kart for the use of there parking lot, Popeye's chicken for the donated lunch on Friday, and the biggest thanks of all goes out to the staff at Linn-Co Credit Union for taking the time to count the money for us on very short notice. That was no small task in itself and they really came through for us. I also do not want to forget to thank Chief Woodson and Assistant Chief Frost for allowing us to do this representing the department, and for the use of the department equipment to promote the event. There are some fire departments around the state that do not get the support to do this from their chiefs.
This will be a yearly event for us and we will be doing it the same weekend every year to take advantage of the increased traffic due to the Oregon Jamboree. So you can count on seeing firefighters with their boots in hand next year to try to raise even more money for this great cause.
