Somebody at City Hall must have been overcome by the vapors rising from the expired spirit of the Sixties.
The mayor is getting ready to issue a proclamation to designate May 1 as - better sit down - "Global Love Day" in Albany.
April Fools Day is long past, so this must be serious. Or at least as serious as Global Love Day can ever be. But there it is on the agenda of the city council's meeting tonight, along with proclamations designating Building Safety Week and Older Americans Month.
Who cooked up Global Love Day? Why, the Love Foundation, of course. And the point? "To facilitate establishing love and peace on our planet."
"Whereas," it says, "… all life is interconnected and interdependent, and all share the universal bond of love." (We do? Does al-Qaida love us?)
What about embracing diversity? Never fear, it's in there.
"Love begins with self-acceptance and forgiveness; with tolerance and compassion we embrace diversity (see?), and together we make a difference through love."
May Day used to be a big thing east of the Iron Curtain when we still had one. It was pretty bad, with throngs of people marching and red flags and slogans about workers uniting and all that.
But even that was easier to take than an official day for Global Love. (hh)
