OSU sweeps at Showcase
Portland - The Oregon State volleyball team won two matches Friday at the Portland State Showcase, defeating UC Riverside in the opener and Idaho in the nightcap.
Against UC Riverside, the Beavers outhit the Highlanders 48-33, winning in set scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-23.
Junior Bree Knitter recorded 10 kills to lead the OSU effort.
"We were fortunate to win the match in three sets due to unforced areas," coach Taras Liskevych said. "We particularly need to hone in on our serving and being involved in entire rallies."
Against Idaho, Oregon State won in four sets, 20-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21.
Rachel Rourke paced all hitters with 18 kills, Jill Sawatzky added 14 and Lauren Rinderknecht had 10. Defensively, senior Ashley Evans had a match-high 12 digs.
Oregon State (7-2) finishes play at the showcase against the University of Portland today.
Oregon 3, UNLV 1
EUGENE - In its 2008 home debut, No. 12 Oregon opened the Oregon Classic with a four-set win over UNLV at McArthur Court.
The Ducks (7-1) won 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-12 over the returning NCAA qualifier Rebels (2-5), and next look ahead to a pair of matches today vs. Eastern Washington (3-4) at 12:30 p.m. and unbeaten Baylor (8-0) at 7 p.m.
Senior Gorana Maricic logged the team's season high in kills with 20. Neticia Enesi added 13, Heather Meyers 12 andSonja Newcombe 11.
