Oregon State defeated Ball State 8-1 and Harvard 2-1 Friday on the first day of the Blue and Gold Felsberg Memorial Tournament, hosted by Florida International University in Miami.
"It was good to get two wins in and get us closer to .500," Oregon State coach Kirk Walker said. "I thought the pitchers did a nice job today, and offensively we showed good balance in the first game and took advantage of timely hitting in the second game."
Oregon State (11-12) tallied 15 hits on the day, led by senior Cambria Miranda's 4-for-7 performance.
Freshman Erin Guzy was close behind with a 3-for-6 day. Guzy had one of the team's two RBIs in the win over the Crimson.
Guzy put Oregon State on the board in the top of the sixth with a two-out RBI double to left center, scoring freshman McKenna Lowe, who reached on a leadoff walk, but sophomore Dani Chisholm was thrown out at home to end the inning.
Harvard (0-6) tied things up in the bottom of the inning with Melissa Schellberg tallying a leadoff single, advancing to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on Jennifer Francis' single through the right side.
OSU sophomore Alana Ford hit the game-winning RBI single to right center before advancing to third on an error by Francis, scoring junior DeAnn Young, who drew a leadoff walk.
Sophomore pitcher Kelly Dyer, who came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth, closed out the game for her second win of the day.
Against Ball State (7-9), Miranda went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Dani Chisholm went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
The first five Beavers reached base, but OSU had to settle for just one run in the opening frame.
The Beavers then tallied single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to build a 4-1 lead and then put the game away with a four-run sixth.
Oregon State will face Ball State again this morning before taking on host, Florida International this afternoon.
