LOS ANGELES - It should be a quiet last week before the Oregon State football team begins training camp a week from today. With everyone eligible, there will be no surprises in the roster, coach Mike Riley said.

The only concern is junior college transfer Simi Kuli.

The five-star defensive end the Beavers are counting on to recharge the line is still working on finishing his academics before he is eligible. Riley was optimistic about this happening, even though there have been reports and rumors to the contrary.

"He might be delayed (starting practice) a little bit," Riley said Thursday at Pac-10 media day. "I don't know for sure, yet. I'll know early next week.

"But it looks good."

Steady roster

The rest of the roster is stable. Safety Bryan Payton and running back Patrick Fuller left the program this summer.

Both of them were going to be seniors, but neither were starters. Payton had been a part-time, big play-maker when on the field; Fuller never lived up to his potential and rarely received playing time.

They had been in trouble with the coaches at various points in their careers for breaking team rules.

"For both of them, a good way to put it is both sides decided to go their separate ways," Riley said.

Staff changes

Gary Beck has been hired as coordinator of support services, a position vacant since the death of Jim Gilstrap in 2007. Beck, a Corvallis native, had been a graduate assistant, coaching running backs the last two years.

He'll deal with recruits once they signed and be the liaison for the team with the medical staff, strength staff and academic representatives.

Other staff changes are Dan Van de Riet was promoted to general manager, which is similar to the old director of operations position. Kelly Harness is the assistant general manager.

Strength coach Bryan Miller is the sports performance coordinator, which adds to him already being the team's strength coach.

He takes on Jeff Macy's old duties now that he left for the Milwaukee Bucks.
