Cross country
AUBURN, Ala. n Oregon State women's cross country captured second place at the Tiger Invitational on Saturday morning.
Senior Sylvia Veal led the way, breaking the school record for 5,000-meters with her time of 16:45 for a 12th place finish at Indian Pines Golf Course.
"This is probably the biggest step for us in our program," OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. "This was a really big performance for our entire team, it was just tremendous."
University of Washington won the meet. The Beavers took second despite losing one of their top runners in sophomore Casey Masterson to soreness.

Men's golf
Palm Desert, Calif. - After two rounds at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate the Oregon State men's golf team is in second place, three strokes behind leader Colorado State.
Senior Alex Williams and junior Paul Peterson lead the Beavers and are both tied for sixth going into the final round of competition.
Williams started the day with a round one 72, then shot a 3-over par 75 to finish the day for a two round total of 147. Peterson shot a 74 in round one and a 73 in round two and was also at 147 to end day one.
OSU concludes the in Desert Intercollegiate with a final round today .
Volleyball
The Oregon State volleyball team took an early two-set lead over No. 5 UCLA, but the Beavers fell short in the final two sets.
Set scores were 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-25, 11-15.
"This was different than last night," head coach Taras Liskevych said. "The team didn't block well, but we did well at pursuing and had good defense. But we've proven we can play with anyone."
Junior Rachel Rourke posted a match-high 20 kills, while defensively senior Ashley Evans dug a season-high 24 balls. Senior Lauren Rinderknecht had a team-high six blocks, and junior Bree Knitter added 12 kills.
