Leake goes the distance as ASU tops Oregon

TEMPE, Ariz. n Arizona State's Mike Leake tossed the first complete game shutout of his career as the third-ranked Sun Devils defeated Oregon, 9-0, on Friday night in Pac-10 baseball.

Leake (13-1), the reigning Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year, held Oregon (14-35, 4-18 Pac-10) scoreless on three hits, while dealing 12 strikeouts in his nine innings on the mound. It was the right-hander's fifth complete game of the year and ninth of his collegiate career.

Oregon starter Erik Stavert (5-5) took the loss, allowing six runs n the most he has surrendered in a single outing this season n on seven hits, four walks and one hit batter. The Ducks' ace lasted just 22/3 innings in his shortest start of the year, before freshman right-hander Chris Garrison came on in relief.

Garrison went the distance, tossing the final 51/3 innings of the game, surrendering three runs (two earned) on four hits and five walks.

ASU (39-11, 17-5) had three extra-base hits, including a Jason Kipinis RBI triple to right center in the eighth. Drew Maggi led the Sun Devils' offense with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Raoul Torrez picked up two RBIs as well. Kole Calhoun was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Carlos Ramirez and Abe Ruiz also added two hits apiece.

The Sun Devils had a 6-0 advantage after just three innings.

The Sun Devils hit Stavert for three runs in bottom of the second as ASU loaded the bases with one out. Stavert hit Raoul Torrez to walk in the first run, while Maggi drove a two-run double down the left field line to raise ASU's advantage to 4-0.
