Murphy powers Knights past Sox

CORVALLIS - First baseman Jim Murphy tuned up for Tuesday night's West Coast College Baseball League all-star game with a two-run homer and two-run double to power the Corvallis Knights to a 6-5 win over Wenatchee on Saturday night before a crowd of 448 at Goss Stadium.

Murphy roped his double to deep center in the third inning for a 3-0 lead and then homered in the fifth for a 6-4 advantage. Relievers Greg Peavey and Kyle Cruikshank shut down Wenatchee over the final two innings after the AppleSox had closed to within 6-5 in the seventh.

The Knights (23-12, 16-10) thus ended a two-game losing streak. Braden Wells drove in their first run in the second inning with a groundout and Clayton Shaw added an RBI double in the fifth.

The Knights and AppleSox (12-14 WCCBL) conclude the series at 1 p.m. today. It's Armed Forces Day, presented by Pioneer Telephone Cooperative; all veterans and enlisted men and women will be admitted free of charge.

Oregon State sophomore-to-be left-hander Blake Keitzman (2-0, 0.00) is the Knights' scheduled starter, opposed by Wenatchee right-hander Nick Bratney (0-1, 2.21) of George Fox University.

The Knights finish their eight-game homestand at 7 p.m. Monday with a non-league game against the Olympia, Wash., Athletics. It's Big League Chew and Trading Card Night; the first 250 kids at Goss Stadium will receive a pack of Big League Chew and Knights Trading Cards.

Knights' pitchers Matt Way, Mike Koons and JR Murphy, outfielder Matt Wyckoff and Jim Murphy will play for the West Division in the WCCBL all-star game on Tuesday, set for 7 p.m. at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash.

The team has Wednesday off and will attend the Seattle Mariners-Baltimore game at Safeco Field. They begin a a six-game WCCBL road trip to Kelowna, B.C., and Bellingham on Thursday.
